Cascades Wins Exclusive Right to Cutting Edge 'Quiet Care'

Greenville, S.C. - March 30, 2009 - The Cascades Verdae, South Carolina's premiere continuing care retirement community, announced today they will be the first continuing care retirement community in South Carolina to use the Quiet Care monitoring system. The Cascades will also have exclusive rights to test and implement any future developments in this state of the art technology. Utilized throughout the Cascades' campus, this revolutionary technology is a proactive approach to healthcare that has the ability to learn the member's normal daily activity patterns. This system uses wireless motion detection through a series of sensors that are discretely located throughout a member's home. Manufactured by the Living Independently Group and GE Healthcare, the monitoring system has revolutionized the healthcare industry, allowing members to have 24/7 medical observation without cameras or microphones, while giving their loved ones the peace of mind they desire.

The system has been hailed for its early warning capabilities, alerting healthcare professionals to changes in a member's daily behavior that can signal a potential health problem. For example, changes in sleeping patterns or daily activity levels could indicate early signs of a health complication, allowing healthcare providers to intervene early before an emergency situation or hospitalization is needed. Family members may have access to the Quiet Care system remotely, allowing them to be actively involved in the care of their loved ones at all times.

Richard Finn, Vice President of Operations of Banyan Senior Living, parent company of The Cascades, says he used the Quiet Care system at a retirement community in New York with much success, prompting him to bring the state of the art system to the Cascades. "This is the first and only proactive approach to healthcare I've seen," Finn said. "All other eldercare systems are reactive - you push a button to call for help after an event has already happened. But the Quiet Care system is many steps ahead. Quiet Care can alert us that a member is becoming ill so we can prevent an emergency from happening. Paired with our industry-leading nursing staff, it will allow us to provide the most superior, preventive care possible."

Ken Bolt, President and CEO of Banyan Senior Living, says the Quiet Care system fits seamlessly into the Cascades mission. "Privacy and peace of mind are important elements of the Cascades lifestyle," Bolt said. "That shouldn't have to change just because a healthcare issue arises. We aim to provide the best life possible for every one of our members. This outstanding system is in line with and will help us accomplish our mission." The Quiet Care devices will be installed in the Health Services Center, which is licensed for 48 assisted living, 24 memory care and 44 skilled nursing private suites in state of the art neighborhood-designed residences.

The opening of the Health Services Center in May will mark the completion of the Cascades construction. The Cascades will celebrate their Grand Opening with "Explore the Cascades, One Experience at a Time" on Tuesday, May 5th at 5:00p.m. The celebration will culminate twenty-one months of construction, a $100 million investment and the hiring of more than 150 new employees.
